Global Academies, which is comprised of Global Leadership Academy Charter School (GLA West) and Global Leadership Academy Southwest (GLASW), will bring back 1,300 scholars in grades 1 through 8 to the classroom at 7:45 a.m. Wednesday.
Global Academies differs from the traditional School District of Philadelphia school year calendar. This allows scholars to continue studies where they left off, as opposed to having to recap and relearn the previous year’s material. On average, students who operate on a standard school year schedule tend to forget a significant portion of what they learned the previous year. Global Academies is working to reverse this trend by operating on a year-round calendar with extended winter and spring intermissions, followed by a shorter summer vacation.
This is the first year that scholars at GLASW will follow this calendar. The administration at GLASW is excited to start its second year under the school district’s Renaissance Initiative, a program that takes underperforming city schools and turns them over to charter management groups.
During the past year, the GLASW team has made major renovations to the neglected school building and more are planned. GLASW uses the same global and holistic curriculum ideas that have been so successful at GLA West for the last decade. Both schools offer scholars a pathway to success and opportunities to experience the world beyond their neighborhood through educational excursions to local, state, national and international historic and cultural sites. Kindergarten scholars will return to the classrooms on Monday, August 21.
