Special Services

Overview

A special education program is designed to meet a scholar’s unique needs, if the scholar qualifies for special education. In order to qualify for a special education, a scholar must…

be diagnosed with an intellectual disability, emotional disturbance, orthopedic impairment, hearing impairment, deafness, speech or language impairment, visual impairment including: blindness, autism, traumatic brain injury, other health impairment, specific learning disability, deaf-blindness, or multiple disabilities. Diagnosis is generally made by the school psychologist through the evaluation process, but also by a child’s own physician, psychologist or mental health provider.

A scholar must not only be diagnosed with at least one of these disabilities, but also must be determined to be in need of special education and related services -- which determination is made by the child’s parent and a school team of qualified professionals.

All scholars who are eligible for special education have the right to a Free Appropriate Public Education (FAPE) in the Least Restrictive Environment (LRE).
